Opportunity: Performers/Actors Wanted

Castlefield Gallery are looking for performers/actors for their forthcoming exhibition Life in the UK / Balance of Probabilities, a debut UK commission by Istanbul based artists Osman Bozkurt and Didem Özbek of PiST/// for the Asia Triennial Manchester 2011.

For this ambitious project, PiST/// will transform Castlefield Gallery into a temporary VISA Application Centre using the exterior and interior of the gallery, fusing theatre, audience participation and installation art.

Performers/actors will play the role of security guards within international artists Bozkurt and Özbek’s multi artform installation and will be required to interact with visitors to Castlefield Gallery whilst remaining in character.

This opportunity will be of particular interest to visual artists interested in performative practice and performing artists.

Dates required Friday 30 September to Sunday 27 November 2011. Usual hours: Wednesday to Sunday 12.30 – 6.15pm

Some evenings are required including Friday 30 September, 4.30-9pm for the press and public launch of Asia Triennial Manchester 2011 and Saturday 15 October, 6-8pm for The Manchester Weekender Festival.

This is an unpaid opportunity. Castlefield Gallery can contribute towards basic travel and lunch expenses.

ComedyCity UK: The business of comedy in Manchester

This is a panel and networking event in partnership with Cofilmic, the comedy film festival. The event will bring together producers, writers, film-makers and performers to look at the opportunities and future of comedy in the region. Confirmed on the panel are Jo Blake, Development Producer at BBC Comedy; Katherine Beacon, Head of Development at BAFTA award winning Jellylegs; comedy writer David Isaac; and Jason Wingard, award winning Director and Film-maker.

Jack Goldhill Painting Prize – New Competition Open for Artists

The Jack Goldhill Painting Prize has been launched to commemorate the life of the businessman and philanthropist Jack Goldhill, celebrating the links he had to the Jewish Care charity and the art world.

The competition is a celebration of fine art in the UK and welcomes artworks of any subject matter that use fine art materials in a variety of wet media including watercolours, oils, acrylic, inks etc. The work can be on any form of support (canvas, paper, wood, plastic etc).

The first prize is worth £5,000. The second prize is £3,000 and the third prize is £1,000. Prizes can be used to support the winners’ ongoing artworks in any wet media.

Amateur or professional artists may enter the competition. Artists of any nationality aged 18 or over, presently living or working in the UK (except paid employees of Jewish Care and their families) are eligible.

The deadline for the receipt of applications is 14 November 2011.

Arts & Heritage Development Manager

Employer: Wigan Leisure & Culture Trust

Salary: PO 1-4 £28,124-£30,308 per annum

Hours: Full time, temporary (maternity leave cover)

Wigan Leisure & Culture Trust (WLCT) manages leisure and cultural facilities and initiatives for over 300,000 Wigan Borough residents and operates services on behalf of other councils. You will play an important part in delivering the service’s key objectives and in developing a programme of activities across the Borough and in partnership with local societies, agencies and organisations.

You will be responsible for the management and delivery of arts and heritage development, line manage a small team and have responsibility for performance and budgetary control.  You must also be able to engage with and provide advice and support to the community on arts and heritage projects and work across services delivered by WLCT.
You will hold a degree or relevant professional qualification or have demonstrated ability to work at the required level.  You must also be able to demonstrate commitment to personal development in both the professional field and in general management.

Funding boost for young musicians

The youth-led community music project, Rock It! has been awarded over £32,000 from the Arts Council to continue running until 2013.

The recent Rock It! event on Queens Park, Bolton became a celebration – and the sun even came out! It featured live music from talented young bands, arts, crafts, sports and other fun activities for children and families.

Representative Tracey Holmes says, “This is a massive boost for the morale of our young people and just goes to show that all their hard work has paid off. We have all breathed a very big sigh of relief!”

Young member Tyler Hind says, “I was gutted to think the project might end. I’d just started volunteering to gain my Silver Arts Award and have organised a lot for the upcoming event, plus I’m now playing in a band. I’m really happy to hear the good news. Long live Rock It!”.
