UnLtd Millennium Awards

The autumn 2011 funding round of the UnLtd Millennium Awards (Level 2) for England opens to applications on 1 November 2011 with a deadline of 21 November 2011.

A complete package of support

UnLtd’s Millennium Awards provide practical and financial support to social entrepreneurs in the UK; people with vision, passion, drive and commitment, who want to change the world for the better.

We know that there are thousands of people who have the ideas and the vision to make a real difference. We also know that many of them need encouragement and support, contact with others just like them, and access to training to help them grow and give their projects the best chance of success.

That’s why you don’t just get money from UnLtd. If you win an award you will get a complete package of support designed just for you, in addition to the financial support.

Levels of award

UnLtd currently offers two levels of award:
Level 1: Awards of between £500 and £5,000 (expected average of £2,000)
Level 2: Awards of up to £15,000

Level 1 Awards are designed to help make new ideas become real projects. UnLtd gives out 1,000 Level 1 Awards each year across the UK. Level 1 Awards are aimed at individuals or informal groups of people who have an idea and want help getting it off the ground. The money is to help with the running costs of the project.

Level 2 Awards support people whose ideas are already developed or pay for the living expenses of Award Winners to help them devote more time to their projects. These Awards are given out once in the spring and once in the autumn.

It is people who are important to UnLtd; which is why we only offer support to individuals. We do not support organisations.

Where the money comes from

UnLtd Millennium Awards are funded by the income from a legacy of £100 million granted by the Millennium Commission. This legacy is carefully invested so that the income can be obtained for awards for the future – this is what is called a permanent endowment.

The Millennium Commission is the only distributor of lottery funds to good causes who some time ago decided to provide awards to individuals. Around 25,000 of these have been made so far and they have been so successful that they decided to provide the legacy to UnLtd to carry on this work for the future

Exhibiting & print sales for photographers | Cornerhouse, Redeye

October 26, 2011
2:00 pmto5:00 pm

A half day workshop for professional photographers that explores options for exhibiting work, building relationships with galleries, and guidelines for editioning prints. It takes place from 14:00 to 17:00 on 26 October 2011 in the Annexe at Cornerhouse, Manchester. Tickets are available from the Cornerhouse website.

We’re very pleased to welcome back one of our most popular and informative presenters, Shirley Read.

An acknowledged expert in this field, and author of the book Exhibiting Photography, Shirley will discuss some of the central questions around looking for exhibitions, organising yourself as an exhibiting photographer or artist, planning an exhibition, making the best use of any available space, designing shows, sequencing & juxtaposing work, framing and hanging.

In addition, Redeye’s Paul Herrmann will present a roundup of advice on pricing prints, and deciding on whether and how to limit the edition of each print.

This event is aimed at any photographer who is considering exhibiting their work, or selling prints.

Shirley Read is an independent curator and author. She recently completed a Research Fellowship at the London College of Communications looking at the development of photographic exhibiting in Britain. She teaches exhibition workshops at all levels and regularly interviews photographers for the Oral History of British Photography, part of the National Sound Archive at the British Library. The second edition of Exhibiting Photography is due out in 2012.
