£100,000 Available for Business Ideas through the Stake Competition

Funded by Channel 4 Education in partnership with Barclays Bank, the Stake is a new competition providing young people in the UK the opportunity to exploit their business and enterprising skills in order to win funding that can be used towards community or business ideas that will make a difference.

The Stake aims to show young people that business and social enterprise can be creative, fun, challenging and that good ideas and passion can be rewarded. The initiative enables the wider public to decide how a total of £100,000 will be spent.

A maximum of six winners will be given up to £20,000 (minimum of £1,000), along with support from Barclays’ mentors and youth engagement agency, Livity, to make their ideas become a reality between January and March 2012.

The money can be used to fund a variety of projects; for example a start-up business, a new school skate ramp or a one-off event.

Anyone aged between 16 and 21 years of age can submit ideas about how they would spend a share of the money. To submit an entry, the participant must be resident in the United Kingdom.

The deadline for the receipt of nominations is 23 December 2011.

Debates on Culture & the Arts

Dan Jarvis, the Shadow Culture Minister has called for a reinvigorated debate on the arts, culture and creative industries, and highlights concerns over philanthropy’s ability to plug the funding gap. He  says that the government needs to ensure that our creative industries and its entrepreneurs can take advantage of this digital age. Evaluator wanted for Manchester cultural attendance and public mental health pilot

This pilot programme is run by a partnership within Manchester City Council consisting of Manchester City Galleries; the Culture Team and Community and Cultural Services; Manchester Public Health; and Manchester Community Health Trainers (MCHT).

The partners have come together in order to develop the use of the City’s cultural facilities to improve public health.

The pilot is designed to:

  1. Encourage six cultural organisations (art gallery, museum, sports event, library, theatre and film venue) to assess and implement how they might encourage greater numbers of people to become regular users of their facility.  An audit and training programme is being developed in consultation with the organisations.  The aim is that people will attend independently as opposed to attending specific workshops or events for specific people.
  2. Encourage MCHT to include cultural attendance in their ‘training’ of clients.  A training programme to this effect is being designed for the HTs.

The evaluator is asked to use quantitative and qualitative methods to assess the success of the Pilot.
