ASDA are seeking to commission an artist/arts organisation/designer to develop, fabricate and install an innovative and unique art work in the grounds of a new store in Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent. This project is being supported by a range of partners in Stoke-on-Trent
Throughout the autumn of 2011 ASDA engaged school children in the local community in a series of consultation workshops to explore design issues associated with designing art in the public realm. The children were tasked to design a concept for a site specific artwork that would be relevant, understandable and attractive to customers, staff and visitors to the Tunstall store. The winning design was by Aliyah Bibi aged 8 from Mill Hill Primary School. The design features a random bar code in the company’s corporate colour of green; Aliyah has cleverly offset the popular branding with purple and a splash of yellow. For a copy of the design, email: paul.bailey@stoke.gov.uk.
The artwork is to be erected within the current landscaped area at the junction of the A5271, Williamson Street and the A50 Scotia Road, set back from the roundabout between the road and the current Asda Car Park.
The aim of the project is to:
- To create a distinctive contemporary art work that embraces Aliyah Bibi’s original concept to an appropriate scale.
- To create a welcoming and attractive feature that can become a focal point for local people and visitors to enjoy.
- To celebrate the area and reflect its aspirational future vision.
- To capture the vision for North Staffordshire as an area of excellence in design.
- To install a permanent public artwork in 2012.
The artwork will provide an attractive feature and become an exciting focus for the Asda Tunstall site; the panel are looking for innovative, contemporary proposals. All designs and materials will be approved by the project management team. Materials you may wish to consider could include reinforced, recycled glass, ceramics, resin or steel and ideally embrace new technologies and be durable. The artwork will ideally be highly visible during the day and at night. Solar technology is preferred for lighting.
The artist/designer will ensure that the design is accessible and easily understood by the public and may include a form of interpretation of the site. Artists and any associated contractors must comply with current health and safety legislation. The artist will be expected to provide risk assessments and method statements to demonstrate consideration of health and safety issues. Particular attention will need to be given to on-site safety during the construction of the artwork. The design must not create hazards to pedestrians. Advice regarding all aspects of health & safety will be offered through the Project Management Team.
The successful artist/designer will develop and design an innovative artwork based on the original bar code concept. He/she will be responsible for the fabrication and installation of the artwork and will ensure the artwork is of the highest quality in terms of design, materials and installation. The successful organisation will be commissioned by contract.
Operationally the project will be co-ordinated and managed by Gleneagles Project Services (GPS) who will be the appointed organisations primary contacts. The appointed organisation/artist will be engaged on a freelance basis to complete this commission only.

- A current C.V. and examples of projects where you have worked in a similar way.
- A detailed project proposal outlining your ideas and how you would deliver including timescales.
