Crafts Council Development Award

The Crafts Council Development Award is for makers who are about to set up their business, or who are within three years of doing so, and consists of:

  • An equipment grant of up to £5000, which must be matched by the recipient

  • A maintenance grant of £2,500

  • A residential course in business training aimed specifically at small creative practices

  • The provision of 1,000 promotional postcards

  • One to one support from a Crafts Council Professional Development Officer, which includes two studio visits

  • Four years representation on Photostore, the Crafts Council’s visual database

  •  

Applications are invited from designer makers who can demonstrate:

  • Quality of ideas/concepts

  • Originality of design

  • Consistency and integrity of voice

  • Quality of making

  • Commitment to the development of practice

  • Understanding of the context and sector in which the work will be placed

  • Exploration and understanding of materials used

  • Extent to which the applicant has researched their equipment needs

  • Consideration of the market for their work and the running of the business

  • Control of production process i.e. making own prototypes and having control over production of the finished item

  •  

  • Relevance to the Crafts Council

To be eligible to apply for the Crafts Council Development Award applicants must:

  • Have completed their studies

  • Be about to or have practised as craftsperson for no more than three years

  • Live and work in England and be resident for tax purposes.
    (The Award is open to non-UK nationals as long as they fulfill this condition.)

There is no minimum or maximum age limit.
