£5m available for collaborative creative industries projects

The Technology Strategy Board is to invest an indicative £5m in a programme to help digital content creators and rights holders realise and maximise the commercial return potential from their intellectual property (IP). Opening in March 2009 the programme is looking for proposals to develop applications that can be deployed across the digital content sector to extend market opportunities and promote the commercial exploitation of IP for content creators and rights holders. Projects can include development of new business models; applications for improving access to collecting revenue from content; solutions to broaden access to content; and the development of tools to support new value chains, among others. There will be two levels of application for projects above and below £100k in value, but in each case there must be clear collaboration between a number of organisations or institutions. Park Networks and artist Alex Wlliams launch painttube.tv

Web Television Company Park Networks and artist Alex Williams have partnered to create an art instruction internet TV channel called painttube. painttube’s address is www.painttube.tv The channel offers short “how to” videos devoted to drawing and painting; others take the viewer inside the minds of great artists to explore their inspiration and techniques. Alex Williams said: “Painttube is designed to encourage people of all ages and abilities to enjoy making art. From absolute beginners to seasoned professionals I believe there will be something on painttube for everyone. I want to build painttube into a popular and ever expanding digital resource.” Park Networks’ Creative Director Mark Gorton added: “We see video on the web as a powerful means of passing on knowledge and skills. The short painttube videos devised and presented by Alex are instructive and entertaining and absolutely free. We want to build a community around painttube where artists can share their ideas and their work.” Notes to Editors: Park Networks was formed by brothers Paul and Mark Gorton. Paul is a prominent engineer based in Vancouver, Canada; Mark is a television producer based on Merseyside, United Kingdom. Park Networks represents a timely bringing together of their software and content skills. Alex Williams studied at St Martins and was a pupil of Sir Peter Blake. Alex has a post graduate degree in education and taught for five years before setting up his own design and print studio. In the mid 70’s he “dropped out” and bought a small holding in Wales. Here he discovered the remote hill farms, mud, rust and decay that shaped his style and gave us a unique record of rural life before what he calls “The 4X4 Invasion”. Success in America and the licensing of his images on fine bone china, greetings cards and prints has made Alex a household name. He lives in Cheltenham and loves the Gloucestershire landscape; his paintings can be seen at The Fosse Gallery, Stow on the Wold.
