Of the city, for the city, In The City
#### In The City’s General Manager, Jon-Paul Waddington, explains the changes which will open up this year’s event to new audiences. #### In The City is changing. Well, perhaps changing isn’t the best word. Growing, evolving, expanding – they’re all better words. Changing could imply that we’re going to be a completely different event and that’s not strictly the case. Let me explain. When Yvette and Tony cooked up the idea for ITC 17 years ago, the world of music and the creative industries was very different from the world we live in now. The main tenant of ITC then was to drag the focus of the global music industry away from London and make Manchester, for three days in October, the place where people came to be inspired, educated and maybe, just maybe, sign the next best band in the world. Now we’re going to carry on doing that here and now in 2008 – that simple idea that has grown into a complex beast is still the main concept behind ITC. We can’t forget what we’ve done and what ITC is rightly famous for doing. What we can do is make ITC do more. So this year more than any other, we’ll be programming signed bands, label showcases, club nights, film events, exhibitions and anything else we can conjure up that looks good. Our unsigned showcases are hugely important to us – we believe in the bands so much that they are, and always have been, free gigs – only now, we’re putting on something for everyone. We’ll protect what we do for the industry, both in the North and beyond, but also create an event that anyone with an interest in music can be a part of, and let’s face it, surely that’s most people isn’t it?
