Call for Artists: Apply now for the 2018 Alexandra Reinhardt Memorial Award, Artist Commission at The Turnpike, Leigh (deadline 23 Oct 2017)

Artists are invited to apply for the 2018 Alexandra Reinhardt Memorial Award (ARMA), Artist Commission, hosted by The Turnpike, Leigh, worth £15,000. The award funds an artist or artists to undertake work with children and young people over approximately 10 weeks, and for the experience to inform the creation of a commissioned artwork accessible to the public. ARMA was established in memory of the artist Alexandra Reinhardt and is supported by the Max Reinhardt Charitable Trust (MRCT).

The successful artist(s) will work with The Turnpike over a 10-week period between February and July 2018, to deliver a programme of after school and weekend engagement workshops for young people in care or those who have recently left the care system. The artist will work closely with The Turnpike’s Learning & Outreach Coordinator, with curatorial support from the Director, Helen Stalker and Exhibition Coordinator, Matt Retallick. The artist(s) will create a semi-permanent or permanent art commission at The Turnpike or in a nearby space accessible to the public, informed by the participatory/education programme. The commission is to be completed by October 2018, for a launch event in November 2018.

This is an exciting opportunity for an artist or artists to undertake a highly respected participatory project and commission which is well supported by project partners, and will be widely promoted, both nationally and internationally. An Evening with Award-winning Children’s Author Gill Lewis

Thu, May 25, 6:30 pm – 9:00pm

Number 70 Oxford Road, Manchester, M1 5NH

Much loved and bestselling children’s author Gill Lewis will be appearing at Number 70 Oxford Road to give a special talk and signing of her latest book A Story Like the Wind. Join us for the opportunity to gain a unique insight into this topical and timely tale.

A small group of refugees is crowded on to a boat on the sea. They share their stories as the boat travels towards the dream of safety and freedom. One boy, Rami, has brought his violin, and his story of how the violin was invented, and of a stallion that could run like the wind, weaves through the other stories, bringing them all together into a celebration of hope and of the power of music and story. A very special, beautifully illustrated, fable for all who strive to understand, and to stand together with, those around them.

Gill Lewis is the multi-award-winning and best-selling author of novels such as Sky Hawk, White Dolphin, and Scarlet Ibis and A Story Like the Wind is her lyrical and unforgettable response to the refugee crisis, which will linger on in the mind long after reading. Beautiful charcoal illustrations from Jo Weaver give this book a very special feel and make it a perfect gift.

This ticket admits one person and is redeemable to the value of £3 against the purchase of ‘A Story Like the Wind’ on the night.

Doors open at 6.30pm and there will be a 7.00pm start for the event itself. The talk will last approximately one hour, will include time for question and answers and will be followed by a book sale and signing. We do hope we can welcome you to this special talk.
