Launch of 2019 European Heritage Awards

The annual awards provide financial prizes and public recognition to outstanding initiatives and best practices by either individuals or organisations that contribute to the protection and enhancement of cultural heritage in Europe.

The European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage was launched in 2002 by the European Commission as part of the implementation of the Culture Programme. Europa Nostra, the Pan-European Federation for Cultural Heritage, was selected to run this awards scheme on the basis of its long experience in publicly recognising, at a European level, individual or joint excellence in the field of Cultural Heritage.

The awards are supported by the European Commission in the framework of the Culture Programme and are granted annually in four categories:

  • Conservation.
  • Research.
  • Dedicated service by individuals or organisations.
  • Education, training and awareness.

 

Entries may be submitted from all countries that take part in the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union. Entries may be submitted for projects/studies or dedicated service to heritage conservation by anyone closely connected to the entry, as long as permission has been gained from the owner of the building or site/author of the study.

Up to 30 entries throughout Europe will receive a certificate as well as a bronze wall plaque to be put up at the awarded building or heritage site. Up to seven of these will also be awarded a Grand Prize, which includes a monetary award of €10,000.

The 2019 Awards deadline is 15 November 2018.

DCMS Announces £1 Million Digital Skills Innovation Fund for Underrepresented People

A new £1 million fund is now open for bids from Local Enterprise Partnerships and Combined Authorities for initiatives aimed at helping people take up digital roles.

Launched by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS), the new Digital Skills Innovation Fund aims to pilot or scale-up innovative programmes that address local or regional digital challenges, while heling people from underrepresented groups gain the skills needed to work in digital roles.

The funding will be used to help women, disabled people, individuals from minority backgrounds or those living in lower socioeconomic areas to succeed in digital fields. This includes data analysts, programmers, cyber security specialists, software developers and marketeers.

The Fund also aims to encourage collaborative working between Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs), local government, the voluntary sector, youth organisations, charities, employers and training providers to address local skills challenges and share good practice.

The Fund has an overall budget of £1 million available for distribution. Grants of between £200,000 and £500,000 will be available.

Bids are invited from LEPs and Combined Authorities (CAs) in England. LEPs and CAs may submit individual bids or collaborate with other LEPs to put forward bids that cover more than one area. Applications submitted by LEPs should identify a lead Local Authority through which the grant can be awarded.

Minister for Digital, Margot James, said:

“It is crucial everyone is able to take advantage of digital technology, whether it is to learn how to use the internet or develop the skills to work in a tech role.

“If we want to maintain our position as a world-leading digital economy we need to work with industry, local authorities and the voluntary sector to develop solutions so no-one is left behind.”

Applications must be submitted by 23:59 on 28 October 2018

Specialist Leaders in Cultural Education (SLiCE) conference

Curious Minds invites you to register for the 2017 Specialist Leaders in Cultural Education (SLiCE) conference. This year’s conference will focus on how the British Values mandate can be delivered effectively through arts and cultural education.

British Values : Beyond box ticking

Can British Values truly be depicted by a display that includes a London bus, a post box and a picture of the Queen or is there more to it than that?

SLiCE fellows think so. Their work this year has sought to find ways to animate the agenda and to dig down deeper in order to make meaning for colleagues and pupils. They have created programmes of work supported by action research that can be disseminated to other schools. SLiCE colleagues, in conjunction with cultural organisations, have researched areas from how cultural education can impact on the understanding of British Values in secondary academies to an investigation of how dance can deliver the British Values agenda in Key Stage 2. The keynote speakers are Prof. Robin Alexander, an academic and educationalist well known for championing the cause of Primary Education, and Paul Collard, Director of Creativity, Culture and Education. Our speakers will look at the inter-cultural aspects of education. The conference will take place in two centres – the morning session at the Riverside Campus at the University of Chester, the base of our partners RECAP (Research into Creative Arts Practice). The afternoon will be hosted at the newly opened Storyhouse theatre, cinema, library and arts centre in Chester, and will feature an inter-active performance by Prof. Allan Owens. The day offers opportunities to network with peers and advance the conversations that arise from the presentations.

An Evening with Award-winning Children’s Author Gill Lewis
