Exploring the UK games scene boom

This breakfast event will hear about the UK’s proud history in the video games industry, where it is headed next and how games fit into a wider business and marketing context.

The event runs from 8am to 10am. Join the discussion on Twitter at #bcvideogames.

Once upon a time, gaming was the preserve of teenage kids in back bedrooms – but it’s now a multi-billion-pound business in the UK.

On the world stage, Microsoft paid £1.5bn for Minecraft maker Mojang while closer to home Macclesfield company Chillingo published mobile blockbuster franchise Angry Birds.

The North West has a proud history in the industry and is at the cutting edge of video game development and gaming technologies today.

The region plays host to more than 600 game developers all striving for the next big thing in gaming – whether it be on powerful platforms such as the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC, or the smartphones which have turned everyone into a potential gamer. Games are also being used in a variety of industries, including health and education.

Earlier this year Cheshire-based Playdemic was bought by TT Games, part of Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment, on the back of its success with free-to-play mobile games such as Golf Clash, which has been downloaded more than a million times.

The runaway success of Pokemon GO – the third most downloaded iOS app in 2016 – shows the huge potential of augmented reality while Sony has sold more than a million PlayStation VR headsets, bringing virtual reality into the mainstream.

Which UK companies are leading innovation in the games industry? What is the future of gaming? And how can business get involved in this multi-billion-dollar market?

These questions and more will be discussed as BusinessCloud brings together an array of industry experts to discuss the UK’s gaming scene.

Confirmed speakers:

  • Paul Gouge, CEO, Playdemic
  • Paul Rustchynsky, game director (new racing IP), Codemasters
  • Annie O’Toole, head of operations, Draw & Code and SwapBots
  • Greg Robinson, investor and board member, Boomdash Digital
  • Clayton Carpenter, programming supervisor, PlaygroundSquad
  • Cari Kirby, marketing manager, Team Cooper
