The Space is a new free digital arts service developed by Arts Council England in partnership with the BBC.

You can access The Space now at thespace.org or by viewing on connected TV or The Space channel (Freeview HD channel 117).

At the heart of The Space is a new commissioning model, enabling artists and organisations to film and make work specifically for the main digital platforms. Some are live-streaming their events, others trailblazing new formats, all with mentoring support and training from the BBC where required.

Work from established organisations of world-renown will sit alongside innovative work from emerging artists to make The Space a laboratory of endeavour, committed to the sharing of new and developing skills.

Destination Local – £1 Million Fund for Digital Media Businesses

In order to boost the potential economic and social opportunities for ‘hyperlocal’ media in the UK, Nesta has launched the Destination Local programme to understand and stimulate the development of this emerging sector.

Through the programme, Nesta will fund 10 proposals that develop and test prototype services for the next-generation of hyperlocal media. In particular, Nesta is looking for prototypes that make the most of mobile technologies to deliver geographically-relevant local media.

The objective of the programme is to understand what new business models may be required, what types of service work well with audiences and the challenges and opportunities of using mobile technologies. Successful applications will be able to demonstrate how they help to understand these themes.

The programme has an overall budget of £1 million. Individual projects will be awarded seed funding of up to £50,000.

Applications can be either new ideas seeking seed funding to launch or existing models seeking to grow and develop.

Businesses providing services located in the UK, using mobile technology to deliver a geographically-relevant service and engaging and interact with the local community may apply.

The deadline for receipt of applications is 17 May 2012. http://www.nesta.org.uk/destination_local
